Working Toward a Fiscally Responsible Budget to Protect Taxpayers

This week marked the final round of public hearings on the proposed 2025-26 state budget, as the Senate Appropriations Committee continued its in-depth review of Governor Shapiro’s $51.5 billion spending plan.

While there are areas of shared interest, this proposal represents a 7.5% increase in spending—$3.6 billion more than the current year—without a clear plan to address Pennsylvania’s structural deficit. I am concerned that it relies on overly optimistic revenue projections and unimplemented policies, while simultaneously depleting our reserves and leaving taxpayers vulnerable to future tax increases and service cuts.

Without a more responsible approach, Pennsylvania could face a $27.3 billion shortfall within five years, completely draining the Rainy-Day Fund and existing savings. Additionally, next year’s budget would already face a $4 billion funding gap, with no identified long-term revenue sources—raising serious concerns about potential tax hikes.

Throughout the hearings, I pressed agency officials on responsible budgeting and financial oversight. This week, during the hearing with the Department of Human Services (DHS), I questioned their $2 billion budget request, noting that this level of spending is unsustainable. I also asked what steps they are taking to prevent fraud and waste, ensuring taxpayer dollars are being used effectively. You can view that exchange here.

I look forward to working with my colleagues to craft a fiscally responsible budget that protects taxpayers, strengthens our economy, and keeps Pennsylvania on solid financial footing.

Beware: Rise in Scams Involving Bitcoin ATMs

Attorney General Dave Sunday is warning Pennsylvanians that scammers are now using Bitcoin ATMs, or “BTMs,” to gain access to other people’s money. This scam starts with messages that sound urgent, like “protect your money” or “take care of any criminal charges.” Unsuspecting consumers may also be persuaded to act because scammers have personal information, such as their bank or financial situation.

After coercing a consumer into making large cash withdrawals, the cyber criminals tell the consumer to deposit the funds into a BTM. Following that deposit, the criminals ask the consumer to scan and send a QR code, which gives the criminal access to the funds. It also, in most cases, makes it impossible to get the money back.

Financial scams typically start with a telephone call, text message, email, social media message or an alert on your computer. Avoid falling prey by never responding directly to unexpected calls or withdrawing cash in response to an unexpected call or message. Learn more ways to protect yourself from scammers.

Tragic Fire in East Stroudsburg

Heartbreaking news out of East Stroudsburg Borough this week — a devastating fire on Courtland Street claimed the lives of two residents. My heart goes out to their families, friends, and everyone grieving this unimaginable loss. No words can ease the pain they’re feeling right now, but I hope they find comfort in the support of this community.

Amidst the tragedy, there was also a moment of heroism. Officer Chris Shelly of the Stroud Area Regional Police Department was the first on scene. With the help of bystanders, they quickly set up a ladder and rescued someone from the burning building. It’s incredible to see people come together in moments like this, putting their own safety on the line to help others.

I also want to express my deepest gratitude to the firefighters, EMS personnel, and everyone who stepped in to help. Their bravery and quick response are a reminder of just how strong and selfless this community is. And as for Officer Shelly—I can’t say I’m surprised. He’s always been someone who looks out for others, and today was just another example of his dedication to keeping people safe.

I know East Stroudsburg is hurting, but they are also standing together. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by this terrible loss.

The Crime Watch Mardi Gras Celebration – Blakely Borough

The Crime Watch Mardi Gras Celebration last weekend was full of energy, community spirit, and plenty of festive fashion. Under the guidance of Mayor Jeanette Mariani, the event wasn’t just about having fun—it was about supporting our local law enforcement and making our community safer.

Over the years, funds raised from this celebration have gone toward important initiatives, including the purchase of Gero, the K-9 Drug Dog. Gero has been a huge asset in helping law enforcement keep drugs off our streets, proving that this event is about more than just beads and masks—it’s about making a real difference.

Between the lively music, the creative Mardi Gras outfits, and the strong turnout, it was clear that Blakely residents take pride in looking out for one another. Events like this show just how powerful a community can be when it comes together for a common goal.

Daylight Saving Time Begins This Weekend

Daylight Saving Time begins this Sunday, March 9, at 2 a.m. While cell phone and computer clocks usually change automatically, most people move their standard clocks and appliances ahead one hour on Saturday night.

It’s also a good time to check smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. If the devices are more than a decade old, experts suggest upgrading to 10-year, sealed battery alarms. They don’t require any battery replacement throughout their lifetime. However, it’s still a good idea to press the test button on the alarms at least once a month. Find more tips here.
