Brown Invites Local Students to Participate in Essay ContestAs we prepare to celebrate our nation’s 250th anniversary, I am pleased to offer a unique opportunity for a high school student in the 40th Senatorial District to take part in a special Pennsylvania Senate Ceremonial Meeting in partnership with America250PA. One student will be selected through an essay competition to join me in Philadelphia for this historic event. This is an exciting opportunity for a local student to experience a ceremonial Senate meeting firsthand and engage directly in the civic process. As we approach this important milestone in our nation’s history, it is critical that we invest in the next generation and encourage meaningful civic engagement. This event continues a long-standing tradition of holding Senate meetings in Philadelphia to mark major anniversaries of our nation’s founding, including past gatherings in 1926 and 1976. This year’s event will take place on Tuesday, May 5, at the National Constitution Center. I will have the opportunity to invite one student from our district, along with a parent or guardian, to attend and represent our community. A travel stipend will be provided to help offset associated costs. I encourage interested students in grades 9 through 12 to apply. This is a meaningful way to learn, engage, and be part of a historic moment for both our Commonwealth and our country. To be considered, students must submit a 250–500-word essay responding to the prompt: “What the Declaration of Independence means to me.” Essays are due by March 30 at 12:00 p.m., and the selected student will be notified on April 3. Submissions can be made through my website. For additional information, students, parents, or schools may contact my office at 570-620-4326 or email mmueller@pasen.gov Brown Announces Next Telephone Town HallDuring my last tele-townhall, it was a pleasure to speak directly with so many of you from the comfort of your own home. We covered a lot of important issues – from school property taxes, to energy, to local government, and data centers – these conversations are valuable in my work for you. I am hosting my next Telephone Town Hall on May 20th at 11AM. You will have the opportunity to listen from the comfort of your own home, or wherever else you may be, and ask questions or share your concerns with me. Saint Patrick’s Day on the Senate FloorI joined with my Senate colleagues this week to wear green for the celebration of St. Patrick’s Day here in Pennsylvania. Always such a great longstanding tradition to honor the Irish heritage that our Commonwealth and the 40th Senate District is so rich in! Department of Education Announce East Stroudsburg University FundingThis week, Mackenzie from my staff joined the Pennsylvania Department of Education at East Stroudsburg University to highlight nearly $1 million in funding supporting the next generation of special education teachers. There are several initiatives at the state level to address the teacher shortage, particularly in special education, where the need it critical. Programs like this one and the accelerated K-12 special education teacher certification create opportunities for individuals already serving in our schools to advance their careers while continuing to support students. Strengthening our education workforce is essential and I am pleased to see this outstanding work happening at East Stroudsburg University.
