Senate Passes Bill Benefitting Career and Technical SchoolsCareer and technical education prepare students for rewarding, family-sustaining careers, often at a significantly reduced cost compared to attending college. Pennsylvania is in great need of people with this training, and there are many job openings waiting to be filled. To ensure people have the training needed for these jobs, the Senate unanimously passed Senate Bill 315. The legislation would provide more certainty regarding grant funding for career and technical education equipment by making funding calculations before the school year in which the allocation occurs. Currently, schools are reimbursed after they have made purchases based on calculations made near the end of the school year. Scenes from the 40th DistrictThis week’s photo winner comes courtesy of Nadia of East Stroudsburg, who took this gorgeous photo of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreational Park. Senator Brown Joins Gary Cee on “My Little Town”On Wednesday, I had the pleasure of joining Gary Cee on Poco 103 for his local spotlight segment, My Little Town. We had a great conversation covering community priorities, upcoming legislative work, and the importance of staying connected with residents across the 40th District. If you weren’t able to tune in live, you can listen to the full segment here. A big thank-you to Gary and the team at Poco 103 for having me on and for all they do to highlight local voices and stories. Purple Star Schools Support Military ChildrenMilitary children face unique challenges as a result of frequent moves and parental deployments. To give them the best chance of success, Senate Republicans passed Act 69 of 2022. The law created the Purple Star designation for schools that demonstrate their commitment to supporting military families. Many schools have embraced this program and stepped up to help the children of our service members. Purple Star Schools go the extra mile to provide stability, resources and a welcoming community for military children, ensuring they have every opportunity to thrive. Pennsylvania has 37,000 children with parents serving in the military – and 80% of these children are in kindergarten through grade 12 and attend public schools. Learn more about Purple Star Schools. Congratulations to Eagle Scout Michael Onorato! Please join me in congratulating Michael Onorato on achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. His dedication, leadership, and commitment to excellence make him a shining example of what Scouting is all about. Wishing Michael continued success and a bright future ahead! Celebrating Wawa’s Grand Opening & A Big Win for Route 209I had a great time celebrating the grand opening of the new Wawa in Smithfield Township this week. Lots of smiles – and free coffee for the next three days! During the event, I was proud to announce a $3 million grant I secured to complete much-needed improvements to Route 209—a critical and heavily traveled road that so many in our community rely on every day. This funding will help ensure safer and more efficient travel for residents, visitors, and local businesses. Wawa is a proud, Pennsylvania-based company, and we’re excited to welcome them to our community. Pennsylvania certainly knows a thing or two about great convenience stores! A big thank-you to Smithfield Township, the Pennsylvania State Police, Marshalls Creek Fire Company, and all the community members who came out to celebrate. Your support made the day even more special! Supporting Animal Welfare in the PoconosThis week, I was proud to coordinate and welcome Kristen Tullo, State Director of Humane PA—the Pennsylvania Humane Society—to the Pocono Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Center for a tour and meaningful discussion on our shared mission to protect and care for animals across the Commonwealth. As co-chair of the bipartisan Animal Protection Caucus, I deeply value partnerships like this that strengthen our collective efforts to support wildlife and promote animal welfare in Pennsylvania. A special thank-you to the Humane Society for their generosity in bringing donations from the Wildlife Center’s Amazon wish list—your kindness makes a real difference!
