April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month: A New Law to Make Our Roads SaferApril is Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and it’s an important reminder that safe driving requires our full attention every time we get behind the wheel. Across Pennsylvania, distracted driving continues to be a leading cause of crashes, injuries, and heartbreaking loss. This past year, I am proud to share that we’ve made a major step forward. After more than a decade of advocacy, I was honored to pass Senate Bill 37, now officially known as Act 18 of 2024—the Paul Miller, Jr. Law. This law is named in memory of Paul Miller, Jr., a young man from Monroe County who tragically lost his life when a distracted tractor-trailer driver struck his vehicle on Route 33. Paul’s parents, Paul and Eileen Miller, have been unwavering partners throughout this journey. The Paul Miller, Jr. Law limits the use of handheld cellphones and other communication devices while driving. Drivers can still use hands-free technology like Bluetooth, docking stations, or speaker systems—as long as your phone use is “hands-free”. In 2023 alone, Pennsylvania saw more than 11,000 crashes involving distracted drivers, and in 2022, fatalities from distracted driving reached a decade high. With this new law, Pennsylvania joins 26 other states, including all our neighboring states, that have enacted a “hands-free” driving law. Passing this bill has been a long journey, but it was a battle worth fighting—and winning—for the safety of our roads. The Paul Miller, Jr. Law will take effect on June 5, 2024. As we observe Distracted Driving Awareness Month, I encourage every Pennsylvanian to stay focused and stay safe. Remember, two hands on the wheel, two eyes on the road, and your mind at task. PA Women Veterans: Register Now for Capitol Ceremony Honoring Your ServicePennsylvania women who served in the armed forces have until May 9 to register for a state Capitol ceremony honoring their service on Tuesday, June 10. A virtual display will also be available online and will go live on June 9. The event will recognize the courage and dedication of Pennsylvania’s women veterans from World War II to the present. Women veterans from all branches of the military are encouraged to attend and take part. The first Women Veterans Day Capitol exhibit took place in 2023, after passage of legislation observing Women Veterans Day in Pennsylvania annually on June 12. New participants are encouraged to share their service stories by completing the required submission form. Veterans featured in last year’s display who wish to participate again may simply update their previous submission. Chestnuthill Township Opens New Regional Emergency FacilityI was honored to attend the ribbon-cutting for Chestnuthill Township’s brand-new Shared Regional Emergency Facility—a state-of-the-art hub that will significantly enhance emergency services for our West End Monroe County community. I am incredibly proud to have supported this initiative and to celebrate alongside the Chestnuthill Township team and all those who made this day possible. Your tireless efforts have resulted in a lasting legacy for the safety and security of our region. Congratulations to all involved—and thank you for your continued commitment to serving our community! Honesdale Lions Club Marks a Century of ImpactThis week, the Honesdale Lions Club to celebrates an extraordinary milestone—100 years of service to the Honesdale community and beyond. Over the past century, the club has made a lasting impact through countless service projects, partnerships, and hands-on support for those in need. This celebration was a heartfelt reminder of what dedicated citizens can accomplish when they come together with a shared purpose. I want to extend my sincerest thanks to all past and present members of the Honesdale Lions Club—you have made a remarkable difference, and your legacy will continue to inspire future generations. A Visit to Perla Coffee Co. & EateryThis week, I had the chance to make a quick stop at Perla Coffee Co. & Eatery, conveniently located right across from Pleasant Valley High School. Between meetings and appointments, it was the perfect spot to recharge with a delicious latte and a welcoming atmosphere! REAL ID to Replace Driver’s License as Federally Acceptable ID on May 7Beginning May 7, Pennsylvanians who wish to board flights, visit military bases and enter certain federal facilities will be required to present a form of federally accepted identification. Options include a passport, military ID or a REAL ID. You do not need to wait until your driver license renews to get a REAL ID. To get one, you must provide documents proving your identity, lawful status, Social Security number and Pennsylvania residency. Review the list of acceptable documents. All documents must be original versions or certified copies (if applicable). While any of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s (PennDOT) driver license centers can verify these documents for customers who want a REAL ID, only certain locations can provide your REAL ID the same day. Otherwise, expect to receive your REAL ID within 15 business days after successful document verification. To make it more convenient for Pennsylvanians to get a REAL ID, PennDOT is offering dedicated time at some driver license centers on April 28 and May 5. Both REAL ID Days are on Mondays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. April 26 is Celebrate Trails DayIncluding trails in state parks, trails in state forests and rail trails – former railway lines that were converted to paths for foot and bicycle traffic – Pennsylvania has thousands of miles of trails to enjoy. Trail lengths and difficulties vary. Some trails are scenic or leisurely, while others are self-guiding educational. Still others offer rigorous exercise. No matter the trail you choose, enjoy it safely by planning the route for your trip as cell phones and GPS units may not work in some areas. Bring a friend, monitor the weather and stay on the trail. It’s also important to share your route and the time you expect to return with someone who will not be on the trail with you.
