Brown’s Bill Advancing Alzheimer’s Support Heads to Governor’s DeskI’m proud to announce that Senate Bill 840, which I sponsored to support families affected by Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders (ADRD), has passed the General Assembly and is now on its way to the Governor’s desk. This legislation establishes a permanent ADRD Division and Advisory Committee within the Department of Aging, ensuring better coordination, access to federal funding, and stronger policies for Alzheimer’s care. With over 280,000 Pennsylvanians currently living with Alzheimer’s and that number expected to grow, the need for a unified approach is urgent. Senate Bill 840 addresses these challenges by breaking down bureaucratic barriers and fostering collaboration across agencies, ensuring our state leads in Alzheimer’s care. This is more than just policy—it’s a commitment to supporting the many families who care for loved ones with ADRD. I’m grateful for the support of my colleagues and the Alzheimer’s Association. This legislation will make a real difference for Pennsylvania’s families. Announcing the Midwifery Modernization Act to Expand Maternity Care AccessThis week, I had the privilege of hosting a press conference during National Midwifery Week, joined by midwives, advocates, and fellow legislators, to announce Senate Bill 1262 – the Midwifery Modernization Act. This bill aims to address the growing challenges in accessing high-quality maternity care, particularly in rural areas of Pennsylvania. Across the U.S., 5.5 million women live in areas with limited access to maternity care, and 810 women die each day from preventable pregnancy-related causes. Here in Pennsylvania, 9% of counties are considered maternity care deserts, with no obstetric services available. These alarming statistics underscore the urgent need for action. The Midwifery Modernization Act is designed to expand access to skilled maternity care by enhancing the role of midwives in our healthcare system. By doing so, we can improve maternal health outcomes and ensure that more Pennsylvania families receive the care they deserve, no matter where they live. This legislation is a critical step toward ensuring safer, more accessible maternity care for all Pennsylvanians. Showcasing the Beauty of Northeast Pennsylvania: Submit Your Photos for ‘Scenes from the 40th District’I’m excited to invite residents of the 40th Senatorial District to participate in the Scenes from the 40th District photo gallery! This initiative is an opportunity to highlight the stunning landscapes, vibrant community life, and rich history of our region through the lens of local photographers. I encourage everyone to submit their best photos capturing the natural beauty, community events, historical landmarks, and everyday moments that make our district special. Whether it’s a breathtaking view of the Pocono Mountains or a snapshot of life in our local towns, this is your chance to showcase what makes Northeast Pennsylvania unique. To participate, simply complete the online submission form and upload your photos here. All submissions must be original, high-quality images taken by residents within the district, which includes parts of Lackawanna, Wayne, and all of Monroe County. All submitted photos will be displayed in our Scenes from the 40th District gallery and may also be featured on my social media channels and in district publications. Each week, one standout photo will be featured in my e-newsletter and on Facebook. I can’t wait to see the creativity and vision of our local photographers! Act 1 of 2023Act 1 of 2023, a landmark law we passed in Pennsylvania, eliminates all costs associated with screening breast MRI, ultrasound, genetic testing and counseling for individuals at high risk of breast cancer who are insured under state-regulated plans. High-risk factors include a personal or family history of breast cancer, abnormal breast screenings or dense breast tissue. Individuals with gene mutations like BRCA1 or BRCA2, or those with a first-degree relative carrying these mutations, are also covered for additional screenings and genetic counseling. The law will be fully in effect for all state-regulated insurance plans by the end of 2025, though many plans will begin coverage between 2024 and 2025. To find out if your plan qualifies, check with your insurer or employer’s human resources. For uninsured or underinsured women who need immediate screenings, Pennsylvania offers no-cost options through the Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program. Community Closet Clothing Drive: Donations Welcome!I’m excited to announce that, in partnership with The Wright Center for Community Health, my northern district office is accepting donations of new and gently used clothing for our upcoming Community Closet event. On November 21st and 22nd, we’ll be distributing these clothes to members of our community who are in need. If you have any clothing items—whether it’s shirts, pants, jackets, or dresses—that you no longer need, please consider donating. Your contributions can make a real difference in the lives of local families. Donations can be dropped off at my northern district office in the lead-up to the event. This is a wonderful opportunity to come together as a community and help those who need it most. I truly appreciate your generosity and support!
