Senate Mental Health Caucus: Mental Health MattersDID YOU KNOW THERE IS PEER SUPPORT? BUILDING ONE CONNECTION AT A TIMEMental health support and strong community partnerships are essential components of Pennsylvania’s behavioral health system. In this month’s Mental Health Matters, we highlight the Pennsylvania Peer Support Coalition (PaPSC), an organization making a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals in recovery. The PaPSC is a statewide network of individuals who draw on their own lived experience with mental health conditions and/or substance use to support others on their recovery journeys. Through innovative peer-centered advocacy, education, and services, PaPSC works to strengthen the well-being and empowerment of people in recovery. It also serves as a central source of information on peer support across the Commonwealth. PaPSC provides critical resources to peer professionals and organizations by offering networking opportunities, educational workshops, and training on recovery and peer support. Each year, the organization hosts a statewide conference that brings together peer specialists, recovery advocates, and community partners. They also maintain information on certified peer specialists and avenues for funding peer support training. In addition, PaPSC ensures that peer voices remain present at the state level. The organization actively participates in the Office of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services and serves on the Mental Health Planning Council to promote policies and programs that reflect the needs and perspectives of the recovery community. The PaPSC is guided by a volunteer Board of Directors representing six regions across Pennsylvania:
The dedicated peer professionals and volunteers who make up the PaPSC continue to play a vital role in strengthening recovery-focused services throughout Pennsylvania.
