Brown Introduces Legislation to Support Volunteer Firefighters

In communities across Pennsylvania, volunteer firefighters play a critical role in ensuring our safety and security. These dedicated men and women respond to emergencies at all hours, often risking their lives to protect others.

The number of volunteer firefighters has plummeted from approximately 360,000 in the 1970s to just 30,000–38,000 today. This sharp decline is not just a statistic—it’s a growing threat to public safety and the long-term viability of our fire services. That’s why I’ve introduced legislation to create the Pennsylvania Volunteer Firefighter Incentive Fund.

If enacted, this fund would provide meaningful financial stipends to volunteer firefighters who have at least three years of active service, respond to at least 60% of emergency calls annually, and are Pennsylvania residents actively serving in a volunteer fire company.

Eligibility would be verified annually by each company’s fire chief.

As a legislator, my priority is to safeguard our communities and provide resources to address challenges like this. I firmly believe that we must act now to reverse the downward trend in volunteer firefighting numbers.

This initiative is about more than just incentives; it’s about recognizing the incredible commitment of these volunteers. Transitioning to a statewide paid fire service would be a costly alternative, and I’m determined to ensure we support the volunteers who serve out of passion and pride for their communities.

Our firefighters deserve our support, and I’m confident that this legislation will make a difference in recruitment, retention, and the future of public safety in Pennsylvania.

Congressman Bresnahan to Host Office Hours at my Office

Starting this week, I’m pleased to announce that Congressman Rob Bresnahan (PA-8) will begin hosting office hours at my Scotrun District Office.

This partnership is an opportunity for residents to meet with Congressman Bresnahan’s staff and address federal issues or inquiries. His team will be available on January 16, 21, and 23 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at my office, located at 2398 PA-611 in Scotrun.

I encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity to connect with his team. Whether you schedule an appointment or simply stop by during office hours, we’re here to help. For more information, feel free to reach out to my office or Congressman Bresnahan’s team directly.

Let’s continue working together to ensure that government works for you.

Jan. 20 is Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. dedicated his life to the pursuit of justice and equality, championing peace even as he worked to bring about transformative change. In times of challenge and transition, his unwavering commitment to treating others with respect and dignity serves as a powerful reminder for us all.

As we honor his legacy, let us celebrate his message of decency and compassion, embracing the idea that differences in perspective can coexist with mutual respect.

In 1983, President Ronald Reagan who signed the legislation establishing the third Monday in January as a federal holiday to commemorate Dr. King’s extraordinary life and enduring impact on our nation. On Monday, we reflect on his dream and recommit ourselves to the values he lived by.

REAL ID to be in Effect on May 7

Beginning May 7, Pennsylvanians will need a REAL ID-compliant license/identification card or other federally acceptable identification (such as a valid passport or military ID) to board domestic commercial flights or enter a military installation or federal facility that requires ID.

To get a REAL ID, you must bring your documents to a driver licensing center for verification in person. Learn about the specific items that are required to be issued a REAL ID. The website also offers the option to pre-verify online if your documents are already on file with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

REAL ID is optional. It is not required to drive, vote, access hospitals, visit the post office, access federal courts or apply for or receive federal benefits.

Maplewood Fire & Rescue

I was honored to attend the Maplewood Fire & Rescue Company’s Installation of Officers Banquet at the beautiful Evergreen Hill venue. I watched the swearing-in of the 2025 officers by Lake Township Supervisor Tim Jaggers and joined so many dedicated individuals, including local officials, mutual aid fire officers, and Representative Jeff Olsommer. A special thanks to Jeremy from National Fire Radio for his inspiring remarks, to The Red School House catering, and DJ Tha Boy Maloy for making the evening memorable. Grateful for the opportunity to celebrate the brave men and women who serve our community.
