Renewing the Call for Lifesaving Cardiac Preparedness LegislationThis week at the Capitol, I was proud to stand alongside survivors, advocates, fellow legislators, and members of the Smart Heart Sports Coalition to renew my call for the passage of Senate Bill 375—legislation I’ve introduced to better protect our students and school communities from sudden cardiac arrest. As you may know, this legislation was initiated after the tragic loss of 15-year-old Greg Moyer, who passed away from sudden cardiac arrest during a basketball game in 2000. Greg’s mother, Rachel, has been a tireless advocate ever since. Senate Bill 375 would require all public and nonpublic schools in Pennsylvania to establish or expand cardiac emergency response plans for athletic activities. It also includes requirements for CPR training and AED readiness—because when a child is participating in a school athletic event, they are in our care. We must be prepared to respond if the unthinkable happens. Sudden cardiac arrest can strike anyone, even those with no known heart condition. That’s why it’s so important that schools, public spaces, and private establishments not only have access to Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) but also know exactly where they are and how to use them in an emergency. This bill is a reasonable, life-saving step that includes:
I was honored to be joined by partners like the NFL’s Smart Heart Sports Coalition, Youth Heart Watch at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and advocates from across the state who are committed to seeing this bill become law. Together, we participated in a hands-on CPR and AED demonstration, reinforcing that preparedness saves lives. Sudden cardiac arrest is the leading cause of death in young athletes. I encourage all Pennsylvanians to contact your state lawmakers and the governor’s office to express your support for Senate Bill 375. Let’s work together to ensure every Pennsylvania school is equipped to respond and save lives. You can view the full press conference here and my remarks here. License Plate and Car Seat Safety Checks Next WeekI invite you to stop by my Scotrun District Office at 2398 Route 611 on Thursday, May 15, between 1:00 PM and 7:00 PM, for free license plate and child car seat safety checks. Trained professionals will be available to inspect license plates for wear or damage that could make them unreadable. Our team will also check child car seats to ensure they are properly installed and appropriate for your child’s age and size. Both services are free of charge and no appointment is necessary. I encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity to help keep you and your family safe on the road. Bill Strengthening PA’s Sexual Offender Registry Approved by SenateThe Senate unanimously approved legislation this week to better protect children in Pennsylvania against sexual predators. Senate Bill 255 would require a sports official, volunteer or employee of a nonprofit association who is convicted of sexual assault to register as a sexual offender under the Sexual Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA). Under current law, a conviction for this offense does not require registration as a sex offender. Closing this loophole will strengthen SORNA and ensure potentially violent sex offenders can be properly monitored. The bill, which now moves to the House of Representatives for consideration, is part of a larger Senate priority of making commonwealth communities safer. Scenes from the 40th DistrictThis week’s photo winner comes courtesy of Kristine of Hamilton Township, who took this gorgeous photo of this charming pollinator. Kristine’s photo has been shared on my social media and posted to the 40th Senatorial District Photo Gallery. Interested in showcasing your photography skills? I am inviting residents of the 40th Senatorial District to share their photography and help capture the beauty and character of our community. Whether it’s a stunning landscape, a lively community event, or a cherished historical landmark, I encourage you to submit photos that highlight the unique aspects of our district, which includes parts of Lackawanna and Wayne counties, and all of Monroe County. Partnering with Future Educators to Address Pennsylvania’s Teacher ShortageThis week, I had the pleasure of welcoming students from East Stroudsburg University and Dean Brooke Langan to the Capitol to continue an important conversation on strengthening Pennsylvania’s teacher pipeline and tackling the statewide teacher shortage crisis. Just a few weeks ago, I was honored to join their panel discussion on this very topic—sharing ideas and highlighting initiatives like Grow PA and the Student Teacher Stipend Program. These efforts are designed to support aspiring educators, remove barriers to certification, and encourage more individuals to pursue careers in the classroom. Habemus Papam! Pope Leo XIVHistory has been made! The Catholic Church has named Pope Leo XIV—the first Pope from the United States. A graduate of Villanova University, with roots right here in Pennsylvania, Pope Leo XIV now takes on the sacred responsibility of serving as the spiritual leader of Catholics around the world. I extend my heartfelt congratulations and join many across our Commonwealth in offering prayers for his strength, wisdom, and faithful service in this historic role. Celebrating a Pennsylvania Victory on the Senate FloorThis week, I had the honor of standing alongside the Lombardi Trophy on the Senate floor. It was a proud reminder of victory for the Philadelphia Eagles and for our Commonwealth. I am always rooting for Pennsylvania! Happy Mother’s Day!Celebrating this incredible woman this weekend—my mom. One photo of her, and one of the beautiful family she helped create. She lives each day with kindness, faith, love, humility, and compassion—with a humble heart of gold. Love you, Mom! To all the amazing moms and those who step in as mother figures—never forget the difference you make, how strong you are, and how important you are to so many. Enjoy this special day celebrating you!
