Please Join me in PrayerIt has been a week heavy on all our hearts after witnessing the horrific actions that unfolded at Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania Saturday evening. Violence is unacceptable in any form; it has no place in our world, let alone in our political discourse. As I watched the events unfold, tears welled up in my eyes – saddened for what is happening in our country—a country we are so blessed to call home. Not only did a former president avoid an assassination attempt, but in a broader sense, our country dodged a bullet as well. An act of this magnitude of violence would have led to even further division, exacerbating an already tense political climate. The potential consequences of such a tragedy are unimaginable, and we must focus on healing, unity, and policies that make a positive impact for all. Pennsylvania resident, Corey Comperatore, was tragically killed, shielding his family from bullets. Corey died a hero – he demonstrated the depths of human courage, giving the ultimate sacrifice, protecting those he loved most. We must stand as Americans, in condemnation of this senseless attack. Our strength as a nation comes from our shared humanity and our common values – our consistent pursuit of freedom and liberty; consent of the governed; natural rights; and equality of all. Join me in praying for our country and join me in extending condolences to the Comperatore family. May God’s love and strength surround them and guide them through this tragic time. See You at the Senior Expo!My annual Senior Expo is this upcoming week! Looking forward to seeing you on Tuesday, July 23 at the Pocono Mountain Swiftwater Elementary Center. The event is from 9 AM – 1 PM and offers something for everyone. There is no admission cost, and we will be offering door prizes, health screenings, food, and dozens of exhibitors. New License Plate Coming in 2025The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has unveiled a new standard license plate for vehicles. The new plate, showcasing Pennsylvania as the birthplace of America, will be available in 2025. It features the Liberty Bell and the text, “Let Freedom Ring.” Military, special organization, special fund and specialty plates without legislatively mandated designs will also be updated with the new design. If you would like to be one of the first to get the new license plate, sign up for updates. You will be notified when the license plate is ready to order. When the plates become available, fee information will be included with replacement instructions on PennDOT’s website and will vary based on plate type and any optional personalization. The department and its partners will use all existing standard issue license plate inventory before transitioning to the new plate design. Limiting the Use of Smartphones in SchoolsLegislation to improve student mental health, academic performance and social skills by limiting student smartphone use in schools has been signed into law. The measure allows schools the option of using dedicated school safety funding for secure, lockable smartphone bags in which students deposit their mobile devices until the end of the school day. Senate Bill 700, now Act 55 of 2024, amended the School Safety and Mental Health Grant Program to allow for the purchase of these smartphone bags as an eligible use of funding. As part of the grant program, school districts receive an automatic base grant of $100,000 and each intermediate unit, area career and technical school, charter school, regional charter school or cyber charter school is provided an automatic base grant of $70,000.
