Senate Committee Votes on Brown’s Statewide Data Center Moratorium AmendmentAbove are my comments during the Senate Local Government Committee when I offered an amendment to establish a three-year statewide moratorium on data center development, giving Pennsylvania the time needed to put meaningful protections in place for our communities. While I again am disappointed my amendment was not adopted, I remain committed to fighting for stronger statewide safeguards. With more than 50 proposed data center projects across the Commonwealth – including more than a dozen in the 40th Senate District – we must ensure growth is responsible and puts our residents first. I want to thank residents for their patience during this difficult time and, most importantly, for the kindness they showed one another. Time and again, neighbors came together to lend a helping hand to one another. I also want to thank the thousands of line-workers, forestry crews, public works employees, first responders, emergency management personnel, dispatchers, engineers, and support staff who worked tirelessly around the clock to restore power and keep our communities safe. Met-Ed and PPL restored service to more than 324,000 customers impacted by the storms. While most customers have had their power restored, crews continue to complete the most complex repairs, including replacing damaged utility poles, repairing downed power lines, and clearing fallen trees to safely restore service. I know these outages were difficult for many families and businesses, especially over the holiday weekend. I am personally in contact daily with our utility providers throughout the restoration process, and we stand ready to assist any residents who continue to experience storm-related issues or need help accessing available resources. The event will give residents the opportunity to learn about resources and programs provided by state government, and local nonprofit and community groups in the area. It will offer a variety of prize drawings provided by vendors, health screenings, entertainment and more. The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that states can take action to protect fairness in women’s sports, specifically holding that states “may maintain women’s and girls’ sports for biological females.” Here in Pennsylvania, we’ve already taken big steps in this direction. I voted in favor of both Senate Bill 9 and Senate Bill 1293 to protect female athletes by requiring public schools and colleges to label sports teams as male, female, or coed. Both bills state that only biological females can join teams designated for women, and the bills would allow students to take legal action if they are harmed by violations of this rule. Independence Hall Senate Ceremonial SessionEarlier this year, I had the honor of participating in a ceremonial session of the Pennsylvania State Senate at the National Constitution Center to commemorate America’s 250th anniversary. Being in Philadelphia, the birthplace of our nation, is always a humbling experience. Standing near Independence Hall, where our Founding Fathers shaped the future of the United States, serves as a powerful reminder of the courage and vision that built our nation. That same sense of history is something I feel every time I step onto the Senate floor. It is a privilege to serve in a place where the decisions we make today will help shape Pennsylvania’s future, just as those who came before us shaped the course of our nation. As we continue to celebrate 250 years of American independence, I am reminded how fortunate we are to live in the Commonwealth where our nation’s story began.
