HARRISBURG – Sen. Rosemary Brown (R-Lackawanna/Monroe/Wayne) and Rep. Jonathan Fritz (R-Susquehanna/Wayne) today issued the following statement regarding Gov. Josh Shapiro’s recent announcement to close additional prison facilities in the commonwealth:
“Keeping SCI Waymart open has been a primary focus. As many of us recall, our facility was on the short list for closure consideration eight years ago. We fought and won that battle, and we are proud to say that we’ve done it again. Another round of closures has just been announced by Gov. Shapiro, and we want to reassure you that SCI Waymart is NOT on that list for proposed shuttering.
“We have worked closely with prison administration, facility employees and the Pennsylvania State Corrections Officers Association to ensure our prison operates at optimal status. The hard work and dedication of the men and women at SCI Waymart have been instrumental in securing its future. These are high-quality jobs that support families and our local economy, and they have always been worth fighting for.
“That said, we must remain vigilant. We will continue working to ensure SCI Waymart remains strong for years to come. If you have concerns or ideas on how we can further support our facility and its workforce, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Your voice and engagement are critical in keeping our community thriving.”
