I am happy to share my legislation SB 507, Midwifery Modernization in Pennsylvania, passed out of the full senate yesterday in a 49-1 floor vote! This legislation will amend the Medical Practice Act of 1985 to establish a certified midwife license.
A licensed midwife is an integral part of Pennsylvania’s health care workforce. Midwives care for women during pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum and the first 28 days of a newborn’s life. Many also provide routine women’s reproductive care, delivering full prenatal care, clinical examinations and screenings. They identify high-risk pregnancies, monitor and support women during labor and childbirth, and teach new and expectant mothers how to care for their babies.
Myself and so many others along the way have been working on this legislation for over 5 years, and it now heads to the PA House of Representatives for consideration!
