Brown Invites Local Student to Participate in Ceremonial Senate Meeting in Philadelphia

MONROE –– Sen. Rosemary M. Brown (R-40) announced an opportunity for a high school student in the 40th Senatorial District to participate in a special Pennsylvania Senate Ceremonial Meeting in partnership with America250PA. The student will be selected through an essay competition.

“This is an exciting opportunity for a local student to experience a historic Senate meeting firsthand and engage in the civic process,” said Brown. “As we approach our nation’s 250th Anniversary, it is important that we invest in the next generation and encourage civic engagement. This opportunity does just that.”

The contest is part of Pennsylvania’s commemoration of the 250th Anniversary of the United States and is designed to engage students in learning about state government, civic responsibility and the role of the Pennsylvania Senate.

This ceremony honors the long tradition of Senate sessions in Philadelphia, including events in 1926 and 1976 to commemorate the 150th and 200th anniversaries of the Declaration of Independence.

The Pennsylvania Senate will continue this tradition with a ceremonial session on Tuesday, May 5, at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. Brown is inviting one student, along with a guardian, from grades 9–12 to join her and represent the district. A travel stipend will be provided to help offset costs.

“I encourage interested and eligible students from across the district to apply,” Brown added. “This program offers a meaningful way to learn, engage, and be part of this historic milestone for our Commonwealth and our country.”

Students must submit their essays by March 30 at 12:00 p.m. Essays must be between 250–500 words and respond to the prompt: “What the Declaration of Independence means to me.”  The winning student will be notified on April 3.

Submissions can be made on Brown’s website: senatorbrown40.com/essay-contest/
